FAMILY PHOTO Outfit Tips

FAMILY PHOTO Outfit Tips

  • Start with Mom’s Outfit. It can be hard to know where to begin, but think of it as building blocks. Start with one outfit and then you can build upon that. My recommendation is to start with mom (or daughter), since women’s clothing tends to have more colors and prints. And let’s be honest, we are more picky about how we look, and moms are typically pulling the outfits together anyways.
  • Use the season to help select color schemes for your outfits. After you’ve chosen mom’s outfit, think about 2-3 coordinating colors, some neutral and one of which pops and brings life to the outfits.

Muted colors tend to be my preference in photoshoots, but let’s be honest: not everyone looks great in muted colors! Think about your personal season and what colors flatter you the most too. For example, I’m a Deep Autumn whereas Landon is a Warm Spring. He looks really drab in some muted tones whereas some colors that compliment him overwhelm me.

Sidenote: If you’re overwhelmed, feel free to contact us or work with your photographer! We usually know what looks best in front of the camera!

  • Choose practical clothing items. This is an important item to keep in mind for every family member but, especially when you are thinking about what to dress your little ones in.

WARNING: If your kids are not comfortable then you’re going to be in for a long photoshoot. Don’t make it more difficult on yourself or your photographer to get the perfect shot. Make sure that everyone is comfortable with their clothing to ensure all smiles.

  • Pick out accessories to add texture to your photos. Accessories are great style pieces that add to your individual outfits and can even tie family members’ outfits together. Accessories will also give your photos variation. Think scarves, hats, gloves, and belts.
  • Limit distracting patterns and large logos. Including articles of clothing with multiple patterns or large logos can become a distraction. Strong prints and abstract patterns can overpower your photo. Avoid items that clash and stick to one pattern or textural element for your portrait session.
  • Plan your outfits in advance. Don’t wait to try on your outfits until the day before! Try on your clothes well in advance so you can switch it up if something isn’t working. Look at your outfit from different angles and move around to make sure it works for lifestyle photos. There’s nothing worse than a gorgeous v-neck dress that keeps gaping wide-open to show your bra as you cuddle and tickle your kiddos.

Family Photo Outfits for Each Season

Fall Family Picture Outfit Ideas

Can you hear the mamas running out to grab pumpkin spice lattes and planning outfits for spooky season? With the weather cooling down, the leaves changing, and a trip to the pumpkin patch in the near future, fall is a fun time to take photos.

If you are taking your family photos during the fall season, incorporate seasonal earth tones, rich maroons or burnt oranges. Wear layers or keep it simple!

Winter Family Photo Outfit Ideas

With everyone home for the holidays, the winter season is one of the most popular times of the year for family photos. You really have two options for the winter:

  • Choose a more seasonal, festive look. Classic red and green holiday colors and plaid patterns are a few of these style trends that are perfect for your photos.
  • Put on a classic winter outfit. Pull out your flannels, scarves, boots and cable-knit sweaters. Get ready to bundle up.

Check out our example but feel free to add layers of texture on top of this with scarves & jackets!

Spring Family Photo Outfit Ideas

Spring is a great time, weather-wise, to take photos. If you’re like me and the Carolina allergens hit you like a brick wall, be sure to take some allergy medicine prior. Soft, crisp hues and pastels are great to rock in spring. Pull out the cream linens and dreamy cottagecore looks if you please. We’re here for them!

Summer Family Photo Shoot Outfit Ideas

We love summer but it does get really hot! Take advantage of light cottons, pretty sheers, denim and slip into your sandals for a casual look. I personally think it's a fun time of year to wear more vibrant colors as well. Wear outfits that are comfortable and will keep your family cool!
